An intensive community listening campaign identified access to safe, affordable housing as an increasing challenge for Metro Denver residents. Through communications, advocacy, and education, this innovative campaign worked to grow understanding and awareness of the broad reach of homelessness and mobilize civic engagement to support solutions.

Our Role

Third Sector Communication Strategies partnered with The Denver Foundation and Spark Policy Institute to develop and lead the Close to Home campaign. Our work began with public opinion polling, focus groups and community outreach to understand existing values and understandings of homelessness, and included creating and branding the campaign, crafting messaging to resonate with existing views, and working with a diverse, cross-sector grassroots network to bring the campaign to life.

We produced a variety of informational assets – campaign website, social media presence, #ICAN cards to generate grassroots engagement, brochures, ads, posters and videos – and provided trainings and technical assistance to the grassroots network to help them integrate shared messaging into their daily communications, grow partnerships to reach more audiences, and identify actions to encourage increasing numbers of people to take to make a meaningful difference in addressing homelessness.

The Close to Home grassroots network – which was made up of individuals with personal experience of homelessness, together with allies in housing, education, domestic violence, business, faith and homelessness-focused organizations and agencies – also created a Storytellers Network. We had the wonderful privilege of mentoring and providing communications supports to storytellers to help them effectively share their compelling stories in a wide array of forums and settings across the metro area – and beyond.

Increasing awareness through advertising and a strong social media presence, broadening understanding by sharing stories in small community gatherings and at large conferences, and mobilizing action through grassroots partners’ extensive and diverse networks, helped more people to understand that losing a home can happen to anyone.

Violence Free Colorado

Violence Free Colorado is a statewide coalition committed to ending relationship violence. Also called domestic violence, relationship violence is abusive behaviors that one person uses to establish and maintain power and control over another person in a relationship.

Our Role

Third Sector Communication strategies worked with Violence Free Colorado as they neared the milestone of their 40th anniversary to update their brand to underscore a proactive, upstream focus with an emphasis on social change achieved through thought leadership, advocacy and collaboration, as well as the continuing provision of programs and services.

Our work to refresh the organizational brand began with stakeholder research. To underscore their commitment to be on the front edge of change in the field, the board and staff agreed it was important to clearly convey what they are for and to increase understanding of the broad reach of relationship abuse.

This led to transitioning away from the name Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence to the broader, more inclusive name, Violence Free Colorado.

The new tagline – Together we can end relationship abuse – emphasizes the coalition’s commitment to work in partnership with survivors and hundreds of organizations across the state to prevent and end “relationship abuse,” a term that encompasses and goes beyond “domestic violence.” The butterfly logo symbolizes survivors of relationship abuse spreading their wings, being strong, transformed and hopeful.

Along with the refreshed name, logo, tagline and visual identity, our work with the staff and board included updating the mission, vision and values statements, crafting a strategy to unveil the new brand at a 40th anniversary event and reinforce the brand through longer-term communications efforts, such as a refreshed and also re-named newsletter.

Our Role

Third Sector Communication Strategies worked together with a coalition of six Colorado-based foundations, Parent Possible, and the Bezos Family Foundation – the creator of Vroom – to develop a strategic framework to anchor and grow the use of Vroom across Colorado by parents and caregivers of children from birth to age 8.

Our work began with research on the budding use of Vroom in a handful of other states and cities, and the early childhood care and learning landscape in Colorado.

Together with Parent Possible, we reached out to an array of community leaders and groups well positioned to help parents and caregivers learn about Vroom. We succeeded in identifying and engaging a broad mix of organizations to actively increase awareness and support the use of Vroom, including health care and early learning providers, museums and libraries, business and the faith community, and more.

With partners on board, we worked closely with Parent Possible and the funders collaborative to develop a statewide implementation framework to guide the implementation of this innovative program.

Drawing on messaging we developed and using colorful and engaging design closely aligned with the national brand, we created a brochure to explain and generate excitement about Vroom in Colorado. The brochure debuted at the Vroom in Colorado launch event we helped to plan, hosted by the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus. Our project wrapped up with a training to help on-board the new Vroom specialist at Parent Possible.

Our Role

Third Sector Communication Strategies has worked closely with the Center to put in place a strategic approach to communications that supports their efforts to engage more researchers in the study of women’s health and sex differences, continues to proactively grow their reputation as a nationally recognized leader on women’s health research, and provides women, their families and healthcare providers with the information they need to make informed health decisions.

Our work has included researching and developing a strategic communications plan, refreshing the organizational brand, researching and writing stories of impact, increasing media coverage, and creating content development processes and an editorial calendar.

Our Role

Third Sector Communication Strategies worked closely with the Council to craft a compelling brand that conveys the innovative leadership of a trusted organization working in close partnership with the early learning and care community it serves. Together, we strengthened the Council’s messaging and strategic approach to communicating and advocating for systems and policy changes that create a quality early childhood system.

The brand refresh process included gathering information from the Council’s most important audiences, refreshing the organizational mission and vision statements, and identifying brand attributes. A new logo mark was designed to signify progress, partners, parents and children in engaging, distinctive, young colors. And the tagline we developed – Shaping Strong Futures Together – underscores the Council’s vision and collaborative approach.

We also created a strategic communications plan to guide Council communications and outreach efforts, including the development of messages that effectively tell their story, prioritize the communication channels best positioned to reach their audiences, and ways to measure the effectiveness of their communications efforts. We provided trainings and technical assistance to help staff learn how to consistently and effectively use the shared messaging and implement the communications strategy.

Denver’s Early Childhood Council brought their new brand and messaging to life in a refreshed website and has done a beautiful job of incorporating the brand identity and positioning into each aspect of its work, from policy presentations to office decor!
